ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Medical Electronics was established in the year 2018 which offers BE in Medical Electronics with an intake of 60 students.
B.E in Medical Electronics is a specialized discipline which integrates engineering with biomedical sciences and clinical practice. It is a 4- year long undergraduate course divided into 8 semesters, with each semester lasting for a period of 6 months. In each semester, students are taught theoretical subjects and exposed to practical lab sessions.
There are numerous career opportunities on offer for Medical Electronics engineers, such as Clinical Engineer, Biomaterials Engineer, Biomechanics Engineer, Bioinstrumentation Engineer and Researcher in the field of research and development at research institutes, government agencies and universities both in India and abroad. Medical electronics Engineers are employed in established Indian companies such as Larsen & Toubro, BPL, Wipro Medical and Siemens in departments like R&D, sales or marketing, depending on their skills and preferences. Professionals in this field can also opt for teaching jobs in universities and colleges.
B.E. in Medical Electronics is the field of engineering that integrates medical science with engineering practices to contribute towards improvement in diagnostic techniques and for delivery of efficient healthcare services. This field applies knowledge of engineering, especially electronics, for devising innovative techniques for treatment of diseases and ailments with modern medical equipment. With advancements in the field, a variety of sophisticated electronic equipment has been introduced in recent years which have revolutionized the field of healthcare and have been instrumental in inventing cures for a range of ailments.
A medical electronics engineer can be called as the doctor of the equipments without which a doctor, a surgeon or a multi specialty hospital is helpless. He/She is the person, who knows the mechanism, operation and maintenance of these equipments. Medical Electronics engineers are the one who design devices and measures that will solve medical and health-related problems by combining their knowledge of biology and medicine with engineering principles and practices. Many do research, along with life scientists, chemists, and medical scientists, to develop and evaluate systems and products such as artificial organs, prostheses (artificial devices that replace missing body parts), instrumentation, medical information systems, health management and care delivery systems.
Medical Electronics engineers also design devices used in various medical procedures, imaging systems such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and devices for automating insulin injections or controlling body functions. Medical Electronics Engineering Technology appeals to students desiring to be technical and at the same time, devote their careers to saving lives by helping doctors. Graduates become medical electronics engineers and maintain, repair, and calibrate the electronic medical instruments used in healthcare. To advance in these careers, it is also important to develop skills in communicating problems, ideas and solutions to other employees.
In the workforce, graduates are typically employed by hospitals or a subcontractor for a hospital. Some graduates are employed by manufacturers of medical instruments or medical devices, or as field support technicians, after earning experience in the field.
This field seeks to bridge the gap between engineering and medicine. The discipline is a combination of design and problem- solving skills of engineering with medical and biological sciences in order to develop healthcare procedures such as diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, and therapy.
Ever- increasing demand for improved medical devices and systems constantly promotes research in fields like Biomechanics, Medical Imaging, Bio-Signal Processing, and Bio-sensors. Career options for Medical Electronics engineers include working in research labs, hospitals for medical equipment maintenance and developing medical software. This course also imparts training to the students for overall design, maintenance and installation of medical instruments. This course aims to strengthen the manpower in the area of Biomedical Engineering, thus forming a bridge between Engineering and Medical streams for Research & Development and also the regular practices.
