VCET has been recognized as a FOSS Centre in Erode district because of its productive association with IIT Bombay. The inauguration of the centre was held on 29th January 2016. Special address was given by Mr.Ramesh Subramaniam CEO, Flycart Technologies, Coimbatore Prof M.Raja Professor/ ECE, IRTT and Ms.Shyma Iyer National Coordinator – Training Spoken Tutorial Project,NIMEICT, MHRD, Govt. of India came over skype and addressed the gathering. As an initiative for switching over to open source, LINUX with UBUNTU workshop was conducted for the faculty members on 29th January 2016 about 25 faculty members attended the program.

Every semester Spoken tutorial Training workshops are planned and organized by the concerned department coordinators for the students under various FOSS Categories for the courses that are mapped within lab hours like C and C++, Scilab, Netbeans, Blender, PHP and MySQL as well as courses mapped outside lab hours are also planned to equip the students with the open source technologies.

32 workshops have been organized for the odd semester and 24 workshops have been organized towards even semester.

1. The department of Bio Medical Engineering organized the workshops on C and C++, Scilab for the II, III and final year students on 15th and 22nd july,2015.
2. The department of Computer Science Engineering organized the workshops on C and C++, Netbeans and Blender for the II, III and final year students on 15th , 22th , and 28th july 2015.
3. The department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering organized the workshop on Scilab on 14th and 17th july 2015 for the II year and third year students.
4. The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized workshops on 8th august and 28th august, 2015 for the pre final year and final year students.
5. The department of information technology organized the workshops on Netbeans, C and C++ , and java for the II, III and final year students on 10th , 14th and 24th August 2015 respectively.
6. The department of mechanical engineering organized workshop on C and C++ and Scilab for the II, III and final year students on 24th , 30th and 31st of July, 2015 respectively.
7. The department of civil engineering organized workshop on C and C++ for the II, III and Final year students on 28th july, 31st july and 4th August respectively.
8. The department of Computer Applications organized workshop on net beans, PHP and MySQL, java and C and C++ for the II year and final year students 10th, 17th , 24th and 28th August,2015.

12. The department of Electronics and Communication Engineering organized workshops on Oscad and Ngspice on 1st February 2016for the Second and third year students.
13. The department of information technology organized the workshops on Linux, Advanced C and Latex for the II, III and final year students on 20th, 27th February 2016 and 5th March 2016 respectively.
14. The department of mechanical engineering organized workshop on Scilab and Openfoam for the II and III year students on 10th , 17th and 20st of February, 2016 respectively.
15. The department of civil engineering organized workshop on Scilab and QCAD for the II and III students on 27th February 2016.

Towards Society

Digital divide tutorials have been created by Spoken tutorial Team with the intention of providing basic information about diverse day‐to‐day use‐case topics, to all age groups of people irrespective of the economic inequality between the groups and this will give everyone access to, use of, or knowledge of various possibilities using information and communication technologies(ICT).

As a part of spreading FOSS to the society we have organized a programme for students of Panchayat union Middle School, Kaaraparai Thindal on 10th july, 2015.The videos in Tamil language on various topics were screened to them. .
